Today’s Pay It Forward Giveaway benefits Backcountry Hunters and Anglers (BHA). A non-partisan organization I have been a member of for some time that is working to preserve roadless tracts of wilderness and wildlife habitat in the United States. They also work to protect hunting and fishing access, and to promote science-based wildlife management of public land.
I am grateful for people like John Muir (who my son is named after), Gifford Pinchot, and my relative Howard Zahniser, among many others, who had the vision to encourage our country’s leadership to set aside land for conservation and preservation for the public good. In particular, I am thankful for large tracts of roadless wilderness where there is relief available from technology and population pressure and an opportunity to interact with wildlife on its own terms.
I wanted to highlight BHA this month in part because since August 18th the United States Forest Service has a proposal in place to fully rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Conservation Rule. This rule has been good for protecting the wild places I care so much about and the reasons for rescinding it are suspect and feel disingenuous. Tomorrow, October 6th, is the last day for public comment on if this rule should be rescinded or not. Please consider contacting your representatives if you are in the United States to ask them to leave the Roadless Area Conservation Rule in place.
If you would like to participate in our Pay It Forward, enter your information in the submission form below. If you are selected, you will have 24 hours to send us your shipping address, and we encourage you to make an undisclosed donation to Backcountry Hunters and Anglers - any amount that fits your budget.
Our Pay It Forward offerings are our attempt to get knives to our customers who may have more restricted budgets (but anyone may participate!) and also give back to our community. Thank you for helping us do this!
As an aside- If you are interested in the history of the Wilderness Act and want to learn more about my grandfather’s cousin Howard Zahniser, the book Wilderness Forever: Howard Zahniser and the Path to the Wilderness Act by Mark Harvey is a good place to geek out.
